The album version of HUNGRY HEART was included on the Greatest Hits ( edition) compilation album, The Essential Bruce Springsteen (both 20editions) compilation album, the Greatest Hits ( editions) compilation album, and the Collection: compilation album.. A different mix of HUNGRY HEART was planned for release on Springsteen's album had it seen the light.

A blowout double-album split evenly between huge house-party numbers (and a wealth of live staples) and darker, real-world tales in the vein of the title track, The River represented a Springsteen out to explore the emerging dualities of his music.
